Why Dodoma?
Dodoma Tanzania Health Development (DTHD) is committed to helping Dodoma Christian Medical Center (DCMC) improve health care in this poorest region of Tanzania through community health work and a specialty hospital.
- Dodoma's Mpwapwa region has the highest incidence of mother infant mortality in Tanzania.
- Thirty percent of the children die before the age of five, mostly from malaria and its complications.
- Young people ages 15-25 account for 60 percent of new HIV infections.
- This central region lacks specialty services.

Sharing God's Gifts to Bring Health and HopeNinety percent of the people in the Dodoma area are subsistence farmers who struggle repeatedly against cycles of drought causing famine and malnutrition. The lack of safe water has many health consequences. Dispensaries provide the first line health care for most of this population. Through the support given to DTHD, DCMC is managing four Lutheran dispensaries in the Kondoa, Kongwa, and Mpwapwa districts and engaging these communities in public health education. A Central Location to Serve ManyDodoma is one of two Tanzanian zones that lack specialty services. Patients must travel one to three days to access such services. The DCMC 300 acre site is near Dodoma town. The infrastructure, well, eight staff houses and an operational dental/training clinic have been completed. A reproductive child health building for maternal child services, high risk pregnancy diagnosis, HIV/AIDS treatment and zonal education is in construction. The eighty bed referral hospital with the focus on needed services that do not exist in the surrounding area is in the planning phase and will be located on the same site. Dodoma's potential is enhanced by its central location and its designation as the parliamentary capital of the country. Dodoma town is growing as more government administrative offices move from Dar es Salaam and people move closer to the city because of the sustained drought. Accessibility is a key factor: Dodoma is linked to major cities by rail, road, and air. The large hospital site provides for future expansion. When there is a need sensed by a few and each individual understands his responsibility and gives his all regardless of the odds, then Jesus works a miracle. —John Maxwell, Church and Business Consultant
